Torrens Reference Designs Launch in Darlington

The benchmark design spans the entire length of the 10.5 kilometer non-stop highway between the Torrens River and Darlington, which includes nearly seven kilometers of tunnels that will allow tens of thousands of vehicles to exit South Road each day.

The T2D project is the largest road infrastructure project in South Australian history and, when completed in 2030, will provide a 78-kilometer non-stop, traffic-light north-south corridor between Gawler and Old Noarlunga.

The design will also be showcased from November 29 to December 12 in more than 20 displays and information kiosks in shopping malls, municipal libraries and community centers across the metropolitan area as part of the next round of engagement.

South Australia’s Prime Minister Steven Marshall said the one-of-a-kind project will support the state’s construction industry for the next decade.

“The design includes two sets of three-lane tunnels making up more than about 60% of the highway and conserving important sites such as Thebarton Theater, Queen of Angels Church and Hindmarsh Cemetery.

“The positioning of the north portal of the Northern Tunnels means that Thebarton Oval, the historic WWII air raid shelter on Ashley Street, as well as the 1912 Hallett Oven and Chimney next to the Brickyard Market will also be preserved.

“This is a tremendous result and demonstrates once again that progress and preservation can coexist in the design and delivery of infrastructure of national significance. “

Currently, 16% of all trips in Greater Adelaide rely on a section of the T2D project or its adjacent parallel alternatives and 96% of people live within 30 minutes of the North-South corridor, highlighting how important it is to complete the pieces.

“Anyone who has walked this section of South Road knows that it has been in desperate need of modernization for years and we are tackling that task,” said Minister Wingard.

“The variability of travel time on South Road is up to six times higher than the Adelaide average and five times worse than the Sydney and Melbourne averages during rush hour.

“When completed, the T2D project will solve this problem by allowing motorists to travel safely and non-stop between the completed projects from Darlington and Torrens Road to River Torrens.”

The T2D project has already awarded contracts worth more than $ 100 million, supporting 286 jobs. Construction of stage 1 of the T2D project (south of the Anzac motorway) is expected to start in 2023 and last around five years, while work on stage 2 (north of the Anzac motorway) is expected to start in 2026, subject to planning, approvals and funding, with completion scheduled for 2030.

The $ 5.422 billion Phase 1 funding is currently being jointly committed by the Australian and South Australian governments.

The total number of full acquisitions of properties identified through the Reference Design is 393, which is the initial estimate of approximately 390 properties announced by the T2D project a year ago.

The November 2020 selection by the Marshall Liberal government of the Hybrid + design for the T2D resulted in up to 480 fewer properties for acquisition than would have been the case had other options been chosen.
